—-The “old fire” was actually 2 fires that merged into a larger one. The original old fire was set by arson and no one has been officially charged with that. However this article shows that the second fire was started accidentally and a man was charged.
——–> “In October 2003, while the Old Fire was burning above San Bernardino, Jeremiah D. Hope had been evacuated from his mountain retreat, when he drove several friends into the San Bernardino National Forest to view the Old Fire. After driving down a dirt road clearly marked “No Motor Vehicles,” Hope drove his vehicle off the road and into an area of dry ferns and grass. When Hope stopped his vehicle, brush underneath was ignited, which started a second forest fire. The Playground Fire that Hope allegedly caused later merged with the Old Fire, and the two fires burned more than 90,000 acres of National Forest land. In a criminal information filed last week in federal court in Riverside, Hope, a 25-year-old Riverside resident, was charged with two misdemeanors – causing National Forest lands to burn and placing a vehicle in a dangerous place.”

—Also, there was a arsonist apprehended and another shot in the “old fire” area in 2007. When police tried to detained the one man he had to be shot. They don’t know if they were involved in the 2003 fire or not.

———Amid worries of new blazes adding to the firestorm already afflicting the region, a man in Hesperia has been arrested on suspicion of arson, and police reported shooting and killing another arson suspect after chasing him out of scrub behind Cal State San Bernardino.
Law enforcement officials said today that they didn’t know whether either of the men had started any of the more than a dozen large fires that have devastated Southern California in recent days, including the nearby Lake Arrowhead blaze. The brush fire in Hesperia was quickly extinguished by residents.
“We don’t know whether he was an arsonist,” Patterson said. “What was related by the Cal State police was that they tried to contact him as a suspicious person in a brush area. Things being how they are, there was a suspicion that he could be an arsonist.”
The area near the campus had been affected by the massive Old Fire of 2003, Patterson said, adding that “it’s very fire-prone. It’s an area that would be very devastated if a fire were to start there.”
